Wine Cellars
 
 
Visit to the wine cellar or champagne factory of Budafok found in the XXII. district. 
 The area was used for growing grapes until the end of the 19th century when
 phylloxera devastated the grapevines. Nowadays the cellars of Budafok are famous
 because one-third of the yearly Hungarian wine production is stored here.
 

 

 Szemlő-hegyi-barlang
 Caves

 Szemlő-hegyi-cave ( Szemlő-hegyi Barlang, II.
 district Pusztaszeri út 35) - its mineral formations
 can be seen with a guide (the air can be used for
 treatment of respiratory diseases). Pálvölgyi -
 dripstone cave (II. district Szépvölgyi út 162) -
 the  city's most beautiful and largest cave. It can
 also be seen with guided tours. 

 

 

 Dohány utcai zsinagóga

 Dohány Street Synagoge (Zsinagóga, VII.
 district Dohány u.2)


 It is Europe's largest functioning synagogue built
 in the second half of the 19th century. Designer:
 Ludwig Förster Viennese architect.
 Style: romantic

 Dohány Street Jewish Museum (National 
 Jewish Religious and Historical Collection). The
 building added to the Synagogue contains the
 collection of  Hungarian Jewish historical and
 artistic mementos and documents.

 

 

 Cogwheel Railway (Fogaskerekű)

 Built at the end of the 19th century (1874) as Europe's third cogwheel railway.
 We can go to Széchenyi mountain which is a popular destination through a trip
 to the Buda hills.

 


 Holocaust Museum (IX. Páva u. 39)

 Found in the IX. district, the only institution of its kind in Central-Eastern Europe 
 which displays the catastrophe.

 


 Margaret Island (Margitsziget)Margitsziget

 The island found in the Danube is today the
 capital's largest communal park, where it is
 forbidden to enter with vehicles. Sights can be
 seen by foot or from the microbus that goes
 around the island ( Ramada - once part of
 Margaret Island- Grand Hotel, Thermal Hotel,
 rock-garden, musical fountain, St. Michael's
 Premonstrant Church, ruins of the Dominican
 Church and convent, statues of the art walk,
 Palatinus open-air bath, ruins of the Franciscan
 church, Hajós Alfréd sports pool, Margaret Island
 grand restaurant, Centennial memorial). A tour  
 guide presents sights on the microbus.
 The natural park, its century-old trees, and
 clean air give real refreshment to the city person.

 


 New York Palace (district VII Erzsébet krt. 9-11)

 Built at the end of the 19th century (between 1891-1895) for the New York Life
 Insurance Association. A cafe functioned on the ground floor. It was a popular
 meeting place for writers, poets and artists at the start of the 20th century. The
 remodeling of the cafe is now finished, the developing of the planned hotel is still in
 progress. (designers: Hauszmann Alajos, Korb Flóris and Giergl Kálmán; style:
 eclectic).
 

 

 
 Nostalgia Railway

 Nostalgic trips in remodeled trains characteristic of the period as a popular tourist
 destination with the organization of MÁV Nosztalgia Kft.

 

 Operaház
 Opera House (Magyar Állami Operaház, 
 district VI Andrássy u.22)


 The country's most beautiful public building built
 between 1875 -1885. (Designer: Ybl Miklós, the
 period's principal Hungarian architect; style:
 neorenaissance. The interior was designed by
 famous artists).


 

 Parlament
 Parliament (district V Kossuth Lajos
 tér 1-3)


 The Hungarian national assembly had no
 permanent place for hundreds of years. This
 absence was replaced by a work that won the
 national competition at the end of the 19th 
 century. It is the country's largest building which
 has become a symbol of the capital. (Designer:
 Steindl Imre, professor at the Technical University;
 Style: eclectic / neogothic)

 

 

 Funicular (Budavári Sikló, district I)

 It runs between Clark Ádám Square and the Buda Castle (Sándor Palace). Europe's
 second funicular was opened in 1870. The funicular, destroyed in the Second World
 War, was restored in 1984.

 


 Rock Church (Sziklatemplom, Gellért rkp. 1/a)

 Found on the side of Gellért hill across from the Gellért Hotel - the cave
 was transformed into a church in the beginning of the 20th century
 (designer: Lux Kálmán; conservator: Order of St. Paul). During the
 communist regime, it was closed but reopened after the change of regime.

 Statue Park (Szoborpark, district XXII Szabadkai u.)Lenin szobor

 This unique collection opened in 1993 displays some
 political statues from the time before the change of
 regime (such as Lenin statue, Marx-Engels statue, Kun
 Béla memorial, etc.) "Wax-works" of retired political
 statues."

 

 

 

 

 


 Terror House (Terror Háza, district VI Andrássy út. 60)

 The former seat of the Arrow Cross party, later in the 50's the center of the
 communist political police, as well as a prison for political captives in its basement.
 Since 2002, the building and the reconstructed basement function as a museum. 
 The militarization of everyday life, political conspiracies, and the methods of
 terrorizing people, of liquidating political captives all come to life.

 


 Pioneer Railway (MÁV children's railway)

 This small train runs from Széchényi mountain in the Buda hills to Hűvösvölgy,
 the final stop. The train built in the 40's and 50's has a staff of children next to
 adult provision.
 

 

 

 VásárcsarnokMarket Hall (Központi Vásárcsarnok,
 IX. Vámház krt. 1-3)

 The building made of ironwork built at the end
 of the 19th. century has glazed tiles, and a wide
 variety of products which make it one of the
 capital's main attractions.
